The publication of Extraordinary Trips didnt stop here : Two years of holiday, Family without name, Mistress Branican, The Carpathians Castle, Claudius Bombarnac, Ptit Bonhomme, The isle with helices. Knight of the Legion dhonneur from 1870, officer in 1892, Jules Verne was member of several institutions as the Geography Society of the Amiens Academy which of he became the director. He made speeches and public lectures : the most entertaining one is certainly his sally An Ideal Town.
About 1895, the legend according to which Jules Verne would have been the social reason of a team of writers, spread in Italia. For checking the novelists existence the Italian writer Edmondo de Amicis went to Amiens, where the Vernes, already rather old, nicely received him. In 1896 the Chemist Eugène Turpin, thinking he recognize himself the character of Thomas Roch in the novel Face au drapeau, that Jules Verne had just published, started proceedings against the latter and his publisher. The novelist, who had really been inspired from Turpin when writing the book the correspondence with his brother proved it, as well as Hetzel.
The theme of Robinson was very dear to Jules Verne. After The Mysterious Island, The Robinsons school, and Two Years Holidays, he wrote a last remainder of the Swiss Robinson of Rudolph Wyss. The Extraordinary Trips weakened at the end of the century and the writer tried a new genre, the detective novel, with The Kip brothers, A Drama in Livonia and Master of the world.
It is to the charm of style that I am more attached, and my regret is that I have not always succeeded in this respect, told Jules Verne in a letter to a journalist. As she had never been admitted the Académie Française, in spite of Alexandre Dumass son, he was conscious not to occupy in Literature the place he deserved. His critical revaluation only began in 1949, when some writers as Butor, Carrouges, Foucault, Le Clézio and Serres discovered in his work, a back fable full of symbols and narrative techniques able to move Verne from the picture of a writer children which he seemed to be condemned to. His last years were rather sad. In 1990, the Verne left the beautiful residence of the rue Charles Dubois in order to return to a more modest house that they had already occupied. Jules Verne continued working until 1904, in spite of the cataract and the diabetes, which carried him on March 24th 1905. The news of his death was commented by the news of the whole world and his funeral was solemn.
