by Hubert La Marle September, 2010 Sources It is necessary to add to Younger’s bibliography a few other books : Raison, Jacques, and Pope, Maurice, Corpus transnuméré du linéaire A, Louvain, Peeters, 1994 La Marle, Hubert, Introduction au Linéaire A : Lire et comprendre l’écriture syllabique de Crète minoenne, Paris, Geuthner, 2000 La Marle, Hubert, L’aventure de l’alphabet : les écritures cursives et linéaires du Proche-Orient et de l’Europe du sud-est à l’Age du bronze, Paris, Geuthner, 2002 La Marle, Hubert, Reading Linear A : script, morphology and glossary of the Minoan language, Geuthner, Paris, 2010 Discussion 1 John Younger considers that my analysis concerns « each Linear A (LA) sign », and that « most of the LA signs » receive a phonetic value. More precisely, I just examined the LA signs that we can reasonably consider as syllabograms (or more widely as phonograms). See Reading Linear A on the different types of signs (p. 18-19), and on the phonograms (p. 20-25). There are 213 signs identified in Linear A (see my volume 2, 1997). I suggest a phonetic value for 95 common signs (see vol. 1 and 2). I study 19 rare signs (see vol. 4, 1999, pp. 15-31). Discussion 2 Younger regards Cretan Hieroglyphic as the first syllabic writing in Crete. But the phonetic structure of Cretan Hieroglyphic remains unclear, and we have archaeological proof that the Proto-Linear A script was used quite early (about the Vounous Proto-Cypro-Minoan script ca. 2100 BC or earlier, see L’aventure de l’alphabet, p. 107-109 ; about the Linear A script from Troy IV ca. 2200-2050, see ibid., p. 140-142). The CH script appears during the MMIA period (ca. 2100-1900 : ibid., p. 121), i.e. nearly at the same time, but its main use begins during MMII (ca. 1800-1700), later. The inscriptions from Arkhanes (ca. 2250-2100, ibid., p. 124-125) appear to belong to a different system. Thus, it is not possible to maintain that Cretan Hieroglyphic « is actually the first syllabic script in Crete ». (on the left, sign 41b on freestone) (ci-joint le signe 41b sur bloc de maçonnerie) |
