Born in Chambéry in 1981, Gautier Capuçon begins to study cello at five in his native city. At the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris he studies the cello with Annie Cochet-Zakine and the piano with Christophe Egiziano, where he receives the First Prize for cello, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Philippe Muller.

In 1999 Gautier Capuçon wins First Prize in the M.Ravel Music Academy of Saint-Jean-de Luz, Second Prize in the International Cello Competition in Christchurch (New Zealand) and First Prize in the André Navarra Competition in Toulouse. In June 2000 he receives the Cello and Chamber Music Prizes at the CNSMP. Then he has master-classes with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna.

In 1997 and 1998, as a musician of the European Community Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, he has the opportunity to improve his musical experiences with Bernard Haitink, Kent Nagano, Pierre Boulez, Daniele Gatti, Seiji Ozawa and Claudio Abbado.

Gautier Capuçon gives recitals in Berlin, Brussels, Hanover, Dresden, London, Paris, Vienna and is invited by the most prestigious festivals: Divonne, Menton, Saint-Denis, La Roque d’Anthéron, Strasbourg, Berlin (invited by Claudio Abbado), Jerusalem, Lockenhaus, Rheingau, Stresa, Spoleto, San Sebastian (with the WDR Orchestra and Semyon Bychkov), Edinburgh, Davos, Lucerne, Verbier, London Mostly Mozart , “Martha Argerich Festival” in Lugano.

Passionate about chamber music, he performs with Martha Argerich, Nicholas Angelich, Daniel Barenboim, Yuri Bashmet, Frank Braley, Gérard Caussé, Myung-Whun Chung, Michel Dalberto, Hélène Grimaud, Paul Gulda, Stephen Kovacevich, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Oleg Maisenberg, Paul Meyer, Gabriela Montero, Emmanuel Pahud, Mikhail Pletnev, Vadim Repin, Pascal Rogé, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Maxim Vengerov, Lilya Zilberstein, Nikolaj Znaider, Ysaye Quartet and his brother.

In 2005 he participates to several “hommages to Friedrich Gulda” with Martha Argerich, playing his cello concerto, in Buenos Aires, Brussels, Munich, La Roque d’Anthéron and Tokyo.
