The Top 5 Black & White Photography Tips

Black & white photography, for me, is one of the most interesting and inspiring aspects of this art form we call our hobby and passion. It’s raw & refined, natural & unusual, bold & subtle, mysterious & open, emotional & impassive, simple & complex, black & white & everything in between. The monochromatic image has been with photography since the beginning, but what began as the only way to capture images has turned into something much deeper.

Interested in stepping-up your black & white game? Here are five tips to get you going in the right direction. If you want to learn more about the actual black & white conversion process in Photoshop, see my past entry that lays out 12 Ways to Make a Black & White Photo.

Canon G9 vs Canon 5D

Mike Solomon recently compared the Canon G9 and 5D. Of course, such a comparison is silly at some level—sort of like testing a Civic and a BMW side by side. But, then again, when you make a lot of photos with the big gear and are looking for a little camera to be a take everywhere machine, you still want to get good quality shots. And, from that perspective, the comparison is a useful one. After all, a G9 will be with you more places than a 5D. Mike writes:

These photos represent the very best photos the G9 is capable of taking, while the 5D hardly broke a sweat. In extreme photographic situations requiring low-light shooting, subject tracking, narrow depth-of-field, and fast shutter speeds, the 5D will surely best the G9. But for situations where you simply need to capture a moment, the G9 is a very impressive option - especially if you’ve been spoiled by the amazing images the 5D produces.

Thanks for the review, Mike. I’ve actually been looking seriously at the G9 and seeing this kind of comparison was really interesting.
