Women in prison films are a subgenre of exploitation film.Their stories feature imprisoned women who are subjected to sexual and physical abuse, typically by sadistic female prison wardens.Perhaps the best explanation for women in prison films notoriety is that it is a cinematized version of the "men's adventure" subgenre of pulp fiction. Nazis tormenting damsels in distress were perennial favourite subjects for the lurid, sub-pornographic covers of sensationalistic "true adventure" magazines such as Argosy in the 1950s and 1960s.
Hollywood made movies set in women's prisons but generally only a small part of the action took place inside the prison. It was not until the 1950's with Caged starring Eleanor Parker and 1955's Women's Prison with Ida Lupino that the whole storyline of the film was set in correctional facilities.
The most well-known examples of the women in prison film are perhaps Chained Heat and Red Heat with Linda Blair followed the same stereotypes and predictability of 1974's Caged Heat (with all the requisite scenes; voyueuristic shower scenes, assaultive guards, lesbianism, catfights) . Pam Grier too starred in a number of films in the genre, such as Roger Corman's The Big Doll House, The Big Bird Cage, and Women in Cages. The most violent movies are the "Nazi-exploitation" with Love camp 7 and Ilsa- she wolf of SS
European cinema (especially in Italy) had its share of the genre with b-movie like 99 women ,Frauengefängnis ,sadomania by Jess Franco , Violence In A Women's Prison by Bruno Mattei and 1990s Caged women-Le Prede Umane ... The jail - women's hell is one of the last W.I.P. films .
In Hong Kong cinema, Bamboo house of dolls produced by the legendary Shaw Brothers is one of the best example of the W.I.P. genre ; the japanese camp movie.
In Japan, Meiko Kaji starred in the Sasori (Scorpion) series of women in prison films.
In the seventies and early eighties , the women in prison films was very popular, nowadays the films are made for the direct-to-video markets.Lloyd A. Simandl is the last director specialized in this kind of films.
