LADY IN RED (1979)

directed by: Lewis Teague
cast: Pamela Sue Martin, Robert Conrad, Louise Fletcher, Dick Miller, Mary Wornov, Christopher Lloyd

This female gangster film holds a special place in my heart. When I was a kid we would gather at a friends house on weekend nights. It was the dawn of cable television. HBO would only come on at night, and even if you didn't have it you can adjust the fine tunning on your television and pick it up. The signal was awful, but for kids waiting to see breast or violence it was worth the endurance. Lady In Red was of our favorites, we relished the images of a naked Nancey Drew. Lady Red still holds up today as great B-movie trash. Pamela Sue Martin rises from poverty to become John Dillinger's girl which can only lead to one place. Yep...up the river. She eventually escapes and becomes the title character, pulling heist of her own.

LAST DANCE (1996)
directed by: Bruce Bresford
cast: Sharon Stone, Rob Morrow, Randy Quaid, Peter Gallagher

This big budget con on death row flick centers on the spoiled lawyer Rick Hayes played by Morrow. Hayes is given a position with the Florida appeals department. Peter Gallagher, sporting one of the worst Southern accents since Gone With the Wind, plays his older brother who is in league with the Governor's political machine. Morrow's first case is Death Row inmate Cindy Liggett (Stone), and as could be expected he runs hurdles for her stay of execution.
The moments leading up to her execution had me wide eyed, but lookout here comes  the Hollywood convention. Yeah, after a decent build up, the poop got to deep in the pants for this production. What had built up as a pretty engaging story decided to go for the boo hoo Dead Poets Society type string pulling antics. The best scene in Last Dance involves the meeting between Hayes and death row con Reese, played by an uncredited Charles S. Dutton. Reese is also trying to get a stay of execution. while on death row he has managed to earn a degree from Harvard, and publish a book that made the New York times bestseller list. His charchter states that  he will be the one to get a stay of execution because he has rehabilitated and marketed himself. Reese is right, his story is much more interesting than everyone else in this film, and it's a shame that his story isn't  more developed.

LOST SOULS (1980) a.k.a. Frauen im Foltercamp  a.k.a. da she  a.k.a. the refugees

directed by Tun Fei Mou

cast ; Chan Shen, Wong Ching Ho

The "lost souls" of this cinematic bad dream are a ragged group of male and female refugees who find themselves shackled in a makeshift prison. The women, in particular, are subjected to a Marquis de Sade-approved catalog of abuse and torture. The male of the species doesn't get off lightly, either; one character is graphically sodomized with an intensity that is rare for any Hong Kong film, let alone one greenlit by Run-Run Shaw (bless his adventurous hide!). There is a surplus of lurid nudity (I'm not complaining, mind you) and much bloodshed and general nastiness.    < Review ge >

LOVERS OF DEVIL'S ISLAND (1972)  a.k.a. Los Amantes De La Isla Del Diablo   a.k.a. Quartier de Femmes a.k.a. Violenze Erotiche In Un Carcere Femminile
directed by: Jess Franco
cast: Dennis Price, Andres Resino, Genevieve Delorie
The story is told in flashback, with Josiane Gibert explaining how she ended up where she is.Dennis Price, as lawyer Lenzi, has little to do but write letters and talk on the phone, but he looks better than in his later productions for Franco. Genevieve Deloir is a fetching heroine, and it's always nice to see Anne Libert (as a deaf-mute) and Britt Nichols in a Franco film. Rosa Palomar plays the warden, and Howard Vernon makes an appearance as a corrupt general. It would also be interesting to see how those who've confused Josiane Gibert with Anne Libert to explain both of their presence in a Franco film!!!!:)The sex and sadism quotient isn't as high as Franco's later WIP films, but it also doesn't seem quite as exploitive either, if that makes any sense.
